A New Place to Hunt for Dividends From Funds, Virginia Munger Kahn, The New York Times, October 16, 2005.  “Investors have long been flocking to actively managed mutual funds in search of rich dividends, and the pace has accelerated since Congress cut the top tax rate on dividends to 15 percent in 2003. But many of those dividend-hungry investors may be looking in the wrong places.  For tax-qualified dividend income, exchange-traded funds and index funds, which tend to be cheaper than actively managed mutual funds, may be a better way to go. E.T.F.'s trade throughout the day, the way stocks do.  Currently, all E.T.F.'s are index funds, and as such, they generally have expenses that are a third to a half that of actively managed funds." Investors Are Using ETF Options To Cut Down Risk, Tara Siegel Bernard, The Wall Street Journal, August 3, 2004.  “As exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, have grown in popularity, individual investors are starting to employ more sophisticated techniques -- namely, using ETF options -- to manage the risk within their investment portfolios.  Exchange-traded funds are baskets of securities that track the movement of a particular index. However, unlike their index-mutual-fund cousins, ETFs trade on an exchange like stocks."  (Exchange Traded Funds (Risk Management))

New Ways to Get Growth and Income Pop Up as Aging Investors' Needs Shift, Tom Lauricella, The Wall Street Journal, September 18, 2005.  “Investors looking for mutual funds that will multiply their money while providing a reliable stream of income haven't had many palatable choices -- until now.  In the past year , there has been an explosion of new offerings to fill that gap. One type buys dividend-paying stocks but is structured as a low-cost exchange-traded fund -- which trades all day on an exchange like a stock -- so it can pass along more of the dividend income it collects to shareholders than a traditional fund. Another buys dividend-paying stocks and also sells options to generate income of 8% to 10% or more." (Exchange Traded Funds)
